  • Old Tbilisi is compact and walkable, so one evening covers Metekhi Church, Narikala, Abanotubani, Shardeni Street and the Bridge of Peace.
  • The best time to start a night walk is about 1.5–2 hours before sunset, so you see the Old Town by day and watch the bridges and fortress light up.
  • The Rike–Narikala cable car has recently run until 22:00 in winter and later in summer, so check the current schedule before you plan a late ride.

🌙Short answer

Yes, a Tbilisi night tour is worth it. After sunset the Old Town is cooler, calmer and lit up, and the walk ends naturally at a Georgian dinner table. Start in the late afternoon, walk through to dark, and finish with a supra.

People often ask me what the best Tbilisi night tour looks like. My answer is simple: walk the Old Town as the light goes, then sit down to eat the way Georgians do. Tbilisi in daytime is busy, a bit dusty and full of traffic. In the evening the same streets slow down, the carved wooden balconies glow, and you start to hear the city: glasses, a guitar from a courtyard, someone laughing on a balcony above you.

This article is for travellers who want to feel the life of a city, not just tick off its monuments. Here are my seven reasons to see Tbilisi at night, and practical advice so the evening goes smoothly.

Why a Tbilisi night tour beats a daytime visit

1. The Old Town finally breathes

In summer, the middle of the day in Tbilisi can be hot, and the Old Town streets are steep and cobbled. When the sun drops behind the hills, the stones cool down, tour groups thin out and locals come out to walk. Shardeni Street, Erekle II Street and the little lanes of Betlemi feel completely different after 8 PM. You walk slower and notice more.

There is one spot where almost every guest goes quiet: the top of the stairs by Upper Betlemi Church. You climb, a little out of breath, turn around, and the whole Old Town is under you: the bath domes, the river, Metekhi lit on its rock, the fortress walls glowing above. I used to fill that moment with history. After so many evenings I learned to say nothing and just wait. Someone always says "okay, now I understand why you love this city", and from there the walk is a different walk.

2. The bridges and the fortress light up

The glass-and-steel Bridge of Peace looks rather modern by day. At night it glows over the Mtkvari River and finally makes sense against the old city. Look up and you will see Narikala Fortress and the Mother of Georgia statue lit above the rooftops, with Metekhi Church on its cliff across the water. This is the moment our Tbilisi by Night: Private Old Town Walk & Traditional Dinner tour is built around: the Old Town after dark, on foot, with a private guide.

3. The view from Narikala at dusk

The Rike–Narikala cable car lifts you from Rike Park to the fortress in a few minutes. Ride it around sunset and you watch the whole city switch on beneath you. As of October 2026, the most recent official change I can point to is the winter schedule announced in November 2025: the cable car opened at 10:00 and closed at 22:00 instead of midnight (1TV report). Check the current hours before you plan a late ride. On our night tour the cable car tickets are included and we time the ride for you. You can always walk back down through the Betlemi stairs.

👟

Shoes matter more than you think

Old Tbilisi is hilly, and the cobblestones get slippery after rain. Wear flat shoes with grip, even if you are dressed up for dinner. Bring a light layer too; evenings near the river cool quickly in spring and autumn.

4. Steam rising over Abanotubani

The brick domes of the Abanotubani sulfur-bath district are the oldest image of Tbilisi. The city's name comes from the Georgian word for "warm". At night the domes are lit from below, and you can smell the sulfur water before you see it. If you want to bathe, Georgia's tourism board notes that evening sessions are the most popular, so book a private room in advance. From there it is a short walk up the gorge to the Leghvtakhevi waterfall, which is right in the city.

5. You see how locals actually spend their evenings

Tbilisi nightlife is not only clubs. For most people here, the evening means a long table with friends, a walk along the river, or wine in a small bar in a courtyard where the neighbours know everyone. A night walk with a local guide gets you into that rhythm: which courtyards you may quietly step into, where the old men play backgammon, and which streets are only for tourists.

When I am not guiding, my evening looks like everybody's here. A friend calls around nine: "Where are you?" By ten we are around a table in someone's courtyard or on a balcony, with bread from the tone oven on the corner and wine from somebody's uncle in Kakheti. Nobody looks at the clock. Guests are always surprised to see families with small children walking by the river close to midnight in summer. In Tbilisi that is not late. That is just the evening.

6. The night ends at a supra

A walk can show you Tbilisi, but dinner is where you understand Georgia. A supra is a traditional feast, led by a tamada (toastmaster) who gives toasts in a set order: to peace, to the family, to those who are no longer with us, to guests. Between toasts the table fills with khachapuri, khinkali, pkhali and badrijani (aubergine rolls with walnut paste), and grilled mtsvadi. Nobody rushes. A good supra is measured in hours, not courses.

7. Wine and song you will not hear anywhere else

In many traditional restaurants, the evening comes with live Georgian polyphonic singing, three voices weaving together without instruments. UNESCO recognises Georgian polyphonic singing as intangible cultural heritage, and also the ancient qvevri wine-making method. Ask for amber wine made in kvevri, buried clay vessels, and you are drinking a tradition thousands of years old. Our guide to kvevri wine explains how it is made.

How to plan your Tbilisi night tour

Best timing

  • Start in the early evening. If you walk on your own, set off 1.5–2 hours before sunset. You see the Old Town's details in daylight, catch golden hour at Narikala, and walk by the river once it is dark.
  • Plan dinner after the walk, not before. Georgians eat late and slowly, so you will not feel out of place sitting down at 9 PM.
  • Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking. Summer evenings are lively but warm. Winter nights are short and cold, but the Old Town is very quiet and atmospheric.

The evening route we walk

  • Metekhi Church on its cliff above the river, where I tell the legend of King Vakhtang Gorgasali and the founding of Tbilisi
  • Rike Park, the riverside promenade, and the cable car across the Mtkvari
  • Narikala Fortress and the Mother of Georgia statue, with a sword in one hand and a cup of wine in the other
  • Down into Abanotubani, the sulfur-bath district, and across Meidan Square, once a caravan stop on the Silk Road
  • Shardeni Street and Erekle II Street, full of cafés, galleries and bars after dark
  • The lit Bridge of Peace for photos, then a traditional Georgian dinner

This is the route of our Tbilisi by Night: Private Old Town Walk & Traditional Dinner tour. It takes about 4 hours, starts in the early evening and is private, just your group of up to 6 people. We pick you up from your hotel and drive you back after dinner. Cable car tickets, the dinner and bottled water are included. If you prefer daylight, our Old Tbilisi Private Walking Tour covers similar streets and includes a wine tasting. For background on the city's neighbourhoods, read our Tbilisi region guide.

Is Tbilisi safe at night?

The central Old Town is busy in the evenings with families, couples and travellers, and most visitors feel comfortable walking there. Use the same common sense you would in any capital: watch your phone in crowded spots, use official ride-hailing apps rather than unmarked taxis, and agree on prices at bars before you order if there is no menu. The mistake I see most often is simple: after a good night, guests jump into whatever car is waiting outside the bar, without a meter and without agreeing on the price, and the ride home costs more than the dinner. I tell every group the same thing at the end of the evening: open the app, wait five minutes, and keep your good mood.

🥟

Eat khinkali like a local

Pick khinkali up by the twisted top, bite a small hole, and drink the broth first. Then eat the rest and leave the dough knot on your plate. Locals count the knots to see who ate the most.

Make a full day of it

A night walk pairs well with a relaxed day outside the city. In the morning, visit Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral on our Mtskheta tour. It is close to Tbilisi, so you are back with time to rest before the evening. If wine is what brought you to Georgia, spend another day in the vineyards on the Kakheti and Sighnaghi day trip, then come back to Tbilisi for a supra that night.
